In the century since the RMS Titanic vanished into the North
Atlantic, thousands of voices have attempted to tell its story. Yet, few
resonate with the same urgent clarity as that of Lawrence Beesley, a
second-class passenger whose pen became as vital as a lifeboat in the aftermath
of the tragedy.
As a science teacher, Beesley possessed a rare, observant eye. While others
were lost in the "mental haze" of the disaster, he was already
documenting the "lessons" that needed to be learned. Just nine weeks
after being rescued by the RMS Carpathia, he published The Loss of the S.S.
Titanic, a clarion call for reform that challenged the narratives of the day.
In my new collection, Titanic Conspiracy: Beneath the Waves, I seek to uncover
the emotional truths and "conspiracies" buried under the weight of
history. On page 99, I reflect on Beesley’s tireless search for clarity amidst
the chaos:
A Poem for Lawrence Beesley
In the wake of the night, where the shadows conspired,
A voice rose from silence, where the lost souls had tired.
Lawrence Beesley, a witness, with pen poised to write,
Sought to capture the truth of that fateful night.
A second-class passenger, aboard the grand ship,
He sailed with the dreams of a world on the tip.
But as the Titanic trembled, her fate sealed in ice,
He bore witness to chaos, to sorrow, and sacrifice.
With the waters encroaching, and the cries in the air,
He penned down the moments, the anguish laid bare.
For in the midst of the turmoil, where falsehoods took flight,
He aimed to bring clarity, to shed honest light.
In June of that year, just two months from the fall,
He published his account, a clarion call.
To challenge the narratives that twisted the blame,
To seek out the truth in a world filled with shame.
With each stroke of his pen, he unravelled the tale,
Of the many who faltered, of the ship’s tragic sail.
For responsibility, he argued, was a web finely spun,
A tapestry woven, where many had run.
He challenged the leaders, the builders, the crew,
Examining failures and the choices they knew.
In the depths of the disaster, he sought to unveil,
The tangled web of truth and the weight of their trail.
Through his eyes, we see the night’s haunting face,
The struggle for survival, the desperate race.
For Beesley’s account was more than just words,
It was a plea for reform, not a song for the birds.
To prevent such a tragedy, to honour the lost,
He called for reflection, for change at all costs.
In the chronicles of history, his voice shall remain,
A beacon of truth in the depths of the pain.
So let us reflect, as we learn of the fight,
On the courage it took to illuminate the night.
For Lawrence Beesley, with his heart laid so bare,
Gave us a glimpse of the night and the weight of despair.
